Academic Partners and Mandates

Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL)

swissnex Boston showcases EPFL flagship research programs from Lausanne through events and regular faculty visits to Boston and supports the recruiting activities of the school in the region. More specifically, swissnex has launched several initiatives to communicate about EPFL in Boston. We are also a partner of the newly-founded, local EPFL alumni chapter A3 US East coast branch.
Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH)

As one of the top ranked engineering schools in Europe, ETH Zurich has developed several collaborations in the Boston area. We are proud to enhance the activities of ETH in Boston by welcoming visiting professors and graduate students for lectures about their breakthrough research. swissnex also hosts faculty and staff for sabbaticals in the Boston area. In addition, swissnex Boston is the founding partner of the ETH Alumni Association New England.
University of Zurich (UZH)

swissnex Boston officially holds the mandate to represent the interests of the University of Zurich in the Boston area. To this end, we promote UZH at local education fairs and connect the UZH alumni base in New England. This mandate is also operated through an intern from the University of Zurich based at swissnex Boston.
HEC Lausanne - The School of Business and Economics of the University of Lausanne

HEC Lausanne provides two interns per year to swissnex Boston. During their stay in Boston, the HEC interns completed their master thesis on a topic closely related to swissnex Boston’s activities, such as entrepreneurship or information management. They also work on the business development of HEC Lausanne in the US.
Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW)

swissnex Boston supports ZHAW internationalization in the Boston area. swissnex was the facilitator of the academic collaboration signed with Worcester Polytechnic Institute. We also organized customized visiting programs for the ZHAW faculty in Massachusetts such as the initiative Women in Leadership.
School of Management Fribourg

swissnex Boston supports the School of Management Fribourg in its efforts to internationalize by providing the school a platform to increase its visibility in New England, connecting the school with local universities and institutions, inform the school about trends in higher education and research, and foster collaborations with MassChallenge.
University of Geneva

swissnex Boston and the University of Geneva signed a service agreement to raise the visibility of the University of Geneva on the east coast of the United States. swissnex Boston was highly active in organizing delegation visits and events for the University of Geneva. The PlanetSolarDeepWater Project, one of swissnex Boston’s major events of the year 2013, was in collaboration with the University of Geneva and echoed an enormous response through the media.
University of Basel

swissnex Boston and the University of Basel agreed on a mandate that will support to organize visits by delegations in Boston, support and advise for their students and researchers but will also facilitate contacts to research institutions and the private industry. For 2015, swissnex Boston and the University of Basel agreed to collaborate for the participation at the yearly Cambridge Science Festival, one of the biggest science-related events in the Greater Boston Area.
Canton of Vaud

swissnex Boston assists the Canton of Vaud and its collaborators in their mission to promote their higher education institutions on the east coast of the United States and Canada. Moreover, swissnex Boston will be involved in the delegation visits for the Canton of Vaud when they visit the area. swissnex Boston hosts groups from the HESAV on a regular basis during their time spent at their local partner institutions.

École hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL)

EHL and swissnex Boston agreed on a mandate that provides an intern to swissnex Boston. During the stay in Boston, the EHL intern dedicates 50% of the work to promote EHL in the United States whereas the other 50% of the time are dedicated to assist swissnex Boston on various tasks within event management, project management, operations, accounting and HR.
Università della Svizzera italiana (USI)

The Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) is among the youngest and most dynamic international universities in Switzerland. With its main campus in Lugano, it is the only Swiss cantonal university in the country’s Italian-speaking region, which gives USI its namesake. Its five faculties are active in several study and research areas: architecture, communication sciences, computational science, data science, economics, health studies, humanities, informatics, medicine and biomedicine. Since February 2017, swissnex Boston an USI have agreed on a collaboration agreement with the objective of expanding the university’s internationalization on the US east coast.

They made it possible! The swissnex network was born thanks to the visionary idea of Thierry Lombard, Managing partner of Lombard Odier. Mr. Lombard made a donation to the Swiss Confederation in 1999 to purchase the current building of swissnex Boston with the goal of building the first public-private consulate fully dedicated to Swiss Science, Technology and Innovation. In 2008 Lombard Odier also supported the creation of a second floor at swissnex Boston. We are proud to have Thierry Lombard sitting on swissnex advisory Board in Switzerland.

swissnex operations are enabled by a joint collaboration between the he State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation of the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research. Our mission is defined by together with SERI that funds over forty percent of our operations.

ThinkSwiss/Presence Switzerland

swissnex Boston supports ThinkSwiss’ mission of promoting exchanges and sharing know-how between the U.S and Switzerland. Founded by Presence Switzerland, ThinkSwiss explores topics of mutual importance for the two countries, in the field of science and technology, culture and policy. As part of the Cambridge Science Festival, swissnex Boston organized a series of events in partnerships with ThinkSwiss around the topics of sustainability and green building and more recently, cells and genetics.
Gebert Ruef Foundation

Together with the CTI, the Gebert Ruef foundation is a founding partners of the US Market Entry CAMP at swissnex Boston and swissnex San Francisco, an acceleration program for Swiss startup companies looking to enter the US market program.
Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI)

Together with the Gebert Ruef Foundation, CTI is a founding partner of the US Market Entry CAMP at swissnex Boston and swissnex San Francisco, an acceleration program for Swiss startup companies looking to enter the US market program. CTI also funded the entrepreneural bootcamp Venture Leaders operated by Venturelab and swissnex Boston.
Canton the Vaud

The Board of Higher Education of Canton de Vaud (DGES) has partnered with swissnex Boston to boost the internationalization of its Schools on the US East Coast. As part of this mandate, swissnex Boston has helped the following institutions to expand their academic collaborations in the Boston area:

Corporate / Industry Partners

Venturelab/ IFJ Institut für Jungunternehmen

swissnex Boston has been the proud partner of venturelab’s entrepreneurial bootcamp Venture Leaders since 2006. The program was originally initiated in 2000 by the Gebert Ruf Stiftung (foundation). The bootcamp brings every year twenty promising Swiss startup entrepreneurs to Boston for a 10-day intensive business training program. The curriculum includes executive education at Babson College, customized workshops on leadership and negotiations, meeting with rising local entrepreneurs and public pitching competition with the local startup community.
Swiss American Chamber of Commerce (SACC)

The Boston Chapter of the SACC was created in 2008 to provide a networking platform and services to Swiss corporations and SME’s active in the Boston area and to American companies interested in business opportunities in Switzerland. swissnex Boston supports the activities of the SACC by providing resources to some of the SACC signature events like the New England Business Breakfast. The swissnex director serves as an advisory member of the Board of SACC.
