1st ETH Alumni NEC Annual Party with Bob Langer
1st ETH Alumni NEC Annual Party with Bob Langer
Happy Birthday!… A year after the ETH Alumni New England Chapter was officially launched at swissnex, nearly 60 alumni gathered once again at the chapter’s “birthplace” to celebrate much more than just the one-year anniversary. Dean Glettig and Daniel Schauffelberger of the ETC NEC Board presented an impressive track record after only 12 months. Since the kick-off event with ETH Zurich President Prof. Ralph Eichler in October 2010, the Board, including a visit to the Lindt Factory in Stratham, has organized four events. The chapter currently has 60 registered members, and in October 2011, was incorporated. Last, but not least, Dean announced the recruitment of a new Board member, Christoph Dumelin, an ETH Alumni who is now a Post-Doctoral fellow at Harvard University. The ETH NEC’s vision to offer a dynamic local alumni network has thus become reality, and continues attracts new members. This success was also honored by Peter Brunner, Director of the ETH Alumni Association in Zurich, who attended the event as well.
The highlight of the evening, however, was the keynote speech of MIT Professor Bob Langer, who received his first honorary doctorate from the ETH Zurich. In his passionate speech, Prof. Langer explained to the audience how applying engineering principles to medicine and drug delivery, and out-of-the-box thinking has resulted in many new therapies. Today, Prof. Langer has approximately 800 issued and pending patents worldwide.
