Electoral Campaign “Made in Switzerland”
Electoral Campaign “Made in Switzerland”
Swissnex Boston and the German-Austrian-Swiss Caucus at Harvard Kennedy School invited Andrea Caroni, a Swiss citizen from Appenzell Ausserrhoden, to talk about his recent electoral campaign. The event was held at swissnex Boston on November 16, 2011. Andrea Caroni was elected National Councilor in October 2011 and thus will represent his Canton (State) in the House of Representatives (Federal Legislature ). Moderated by campaign specialist Steve Jarding, Lecturer of Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, Andrea explained his campaign strategy. He chose to attend as many gatherings like farmer’s fairs, cultural events etc as possible in order to present himself as the official candidate of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) to the residents of the different villages and towns. He found it crucial to stick to his slogal “Ausserrhoden hat Zukunft” (Ausserrhoden has future) and always to wear a green shirt. Andrea mentioned that his frequent appearances in person, in the local newspapers and on billboards got him the necessary votes to win. Ironically, he did not mention his political policies and those of his party in his PR and very few people actually asked him about this. Andrea had to compete against 3 other candidates from different political parties and won the race with 51.50 % of votes. Andrea who is currently a Master in Public Administration Candidate at Harvard Kennedy School will therefore represent his Canton in the National Council as of January 1, 2012. We congratulate Andrea to this fantastic result und thank him once more for sharing his interesting campaign with us.
