Expert Exchange Roundtable on PERSONALIZED MEDICINE

Jun 23, 2011 11:22 AM

The landscape of disease management, clinical research and scientific investigation is profoundly altered by the breakthroughs in genetics and computing. These new tools are changing the understanding of disease biology, enable individualized risk prediction, customize disease prevention, predict response to therapies and help to define medication type and dosages with greater precision than ever. Initiatives in the past 5 years indicate that the payment policies of both public and private insurers are beginning to move toward supporting the implementation of the personalized medicine in the daily practice, which deeply impacts the healthcare market.

In that context swissnex Boston hosted a second Expert Exchange Roundtable on May 24th, 2011 which turned out to be a great success. In collaboration with the Centre for Global Dialogue of SwissRe, swissnex brought together two experts in the field of personalized medicine: Mara Aspinall, Director and former Chief Executive Officer of On-Q-ity, and Dr. Keith F. Batchelder founder and Chief Executive Officer of Genomic Healthcare Strategies. Mara and Keith shared their views on how personalized medicine will change the future in healthcare, on what it will bring for patients and on how insurers will need to adjust themselves profoundly in the new world of molecular medicine. An open discussion on “pay for performance” rose among the audience gathering people from the academia, biotech and healthcare system. Experts of SwissRe joined in via videoconference. The discussion, moderate by Christoph Nabholz, Head Business Development at Swiss Re, kept ongoing at a following brunch hold at swissnex.

This conference was the second of a series of events hosted on medical trends. The first one engaged an array of experts to explore the trends and challenges of using Monoclonal antibodies in Cancer treatment. The next on June 23rd will focus on stroke. The roundtables will culminate in a one-day conference on September 09th, 2011. Topics in focus will be longevity trends and perspectives with a look into health care systems, medical best practice and innovation in disease management.
