Fribourg business students hear the facts on start-ups
Dec 09, 2010 09:32 AM

As a center of innovation, the Boston area is home to innumerable start-ups. But establishing one’s own business is never an easy task, especially given the rapid changes in markets, technologies and economies we’ve all experienced.
In this regard, Prof. Rico Baldegger and his class of master’s students at the School of Business Administration of Fribourg journeyed to the Boston area as part of a study trip focusing on “Discovering New Markets and Technology Entrepreneurship.”
With the assistance of swissnex Boston, the group spent four days meeting with entrepreneurs and consultants. Among those who imparted their experiences and analyses of Boston’s stimulating ecosystem were:
- Andreas Goeldi, co-founder of Buzzient (among other companies);
- Vincent Linder, Founder/CTO of Claros Diagnostics;
- Richard Bansfield, CEO of Fresh Tilled Soil; and
- Hampus Hillerstrom, co-founder of NeuroPhage Pharmaceuticals.
Through interactive sessions, the students inquired about the challenges, opportunities and, of course, problems of new businesses.
But Q&As weren’t the only items on the agenda for Prof. Baldegger and his students. They witnessed numerous presentations, including one on med-tech regulations, mixed with highly collaborative workshops, like one on design at Essential, Inc. There was also a networking lunch with the MassChallenge teams, and company visits to sites such as Fraunhofer CSE. And finally, offering some relief from their hectic program, the group was treated to well-organized tours of the expansive Harvard and MIT campuses, both a short distance away from the swissnex Boston office.
