Human Rights & Human Dignity Through the United Nations, February 12

Feb 17, 2009 12:55 PM

The Harvard Committee for Human Rights Studies and the Consulate-swissnex Boston co-organized the 1st Annual UN High Level Debriefing with Swiss Ambassador to the United Nations, Peter Maurer. This event was part of Harvard’s Human Rights Distinguished Lecture Series.

  • The afternoon started with an interactive seminar for 25 human rights scholars. The role of the UN in enforcing human rights globally and the progress in the Human Rights Council were among the intensively discussed topics.

  • In late afternoon, Professor Stephen Marks joined the lively public panel discussion moderated by Professor Jacqueline Bhabha. Ambassador Maurer’s overview on recent policy debates in the General Assembly, Security Council, the Human Rights Council, the protection of civilians in conflict, legal empowerment of the poor, and climate change were commented by Professor Marks and Professor Bhabha. The over 80 attendees had ample opportunities to interact with the 3 speakers.

  • The evening concluded with a cozy networking dinner at the Swiss Consulate.

  • The Consulate-swissnex Boston is looking forward to its 2nd UN High Level Debriefing in 2010.
