Targeting cancer with monoclonals
Targeting cancer with monoclonals
In the arduous search to find a cure for cancer, swissnex Boston engaged an array of experts to explore the trends and challenges of using “Monoclonal Antibodies in Cancer Treatment.”
The roundtable on March 17, 2011, was organized with the Centre for Global Dialogue of SwissRe and moderated by Helen Chung, SwissRe’s Director/Head of Medical Research at SwissRe. Epitomizing swissnex Boston’s multi-disciplinary approach, guests came from the pharmaceutical, biotech, insurance and actuary industries, as well as from academia. And while most came to the swissnex Boston office, others joined via videoconference.
Each speaker broached the topic differently but provided comprehensive data, opinions and outlooks on this approach to cancer treatment.
Dr. Denis R. Miller, Global Therapeutic Area Leader of Oncology/Hematology at PAREXEL International, outlined the clinical challenges faced in identifying and quantifying the direct curative effects of targeting tumor cells with monoclonal antibodies.
Using a fact-based analysis, Dr. Janice Reichert, Research Assistant Professor at Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development and editor-in-chief of mAbs journal, commented on recent approval rates of antibodies in clinical trials.
And Dr. Bruce Babbitt, Principal Consultant at PAREXEL International, enlightened participants on progress in the “biosimilars” field.
But the discussion was not restricted to the panel, as opinions and questions were constantly exchanged among guests, including those following by videoconference. Given the high level of participation on this important topic, swissnex Boston expects to see further progress in the fight against cancer.
