The circus has come to town: Delessert on show in Amherst
Humpty Dumpty has left Lausanne and landed in New England. And he’s fallen headfirst into a fascinating art exhibition in Amherst, MA!
Humpty Dumpty, in this case, is less a fictional character and more of a politically-charged interpretation by Etienne Delessert, a Swiss-born artist from Lausanne.
In celebration of his 70th birthday, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst is currently exhibiting Delessert’s work “What a circus!”. This retrospective display comprises nearly a hundred pieces from the more than eighty books he has written and/or illustrated
Together with his family, Andreas Rufer, Deputy Consul at swissnex Boston, attended the exhibition’s opening ceremony on February 19, 2011. Connecting the dots in the fine arts, the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia and the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York made financial contributions to both the exhibition and its opening reception, which featured Swiss delights and an array of Swiss wine.
From his early collaboration with Eugène Ionesco to surreal, highly political interpretations of Big and Bad and Humpty Dumpty, Delessert has intrigued readers young and old with his imaginary creatures and mesmerizing landscapes. Now, Boston-area art lovers have the chance to be captivated by such works up close until June 5, 2011.
