Summer Research Program 08

Summer Research Program 2008 - School of Life Sciences - Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland:
July 7 - September 5, 2008

The Summer Research Program in Life Sciences and Technology at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, in collaboration with the University of Lausanne, is offering summer research training opportunities to undergraduate students interested in research careers in the life sciences. We seek to attract the best candidates and thus financial compensation will be provided to cover successful candidates' living and travel expenses. The program will run from July 7th to September 5th, 2008, although earlier arrivals and later departures can be envisaged.

Biomedical research increasingly relies on quantitative approaches and cutting edge technology. Many would agree that the future of the life sciences lies at the crossroads of biology, hard sciences (chemistry, mathematics, computer science) and engineering. The School of Life Sciences at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland - http://sv.epfl.ch/ was created on this premise. Capitalizing on its inital development in neuroscience (under the auspices of the Brain Mind Institute) and biotechnology (led by the Institute of Bioengineering), the School of Life Sciences continues to grow; in 2005 the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC) joined EPFL, and the Global Health Institute was launched. In all areas, integrated approaches spanning a range of disciplines from functional genomics to System Biology & high-tech bioengineering are emphasized.

Selection Criteria: Up to 25 summer research fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis, taking into consideration several criteria including the student's academic record, personal statement and letters of recommendation.
Additional information and the application are available online: http://ssv.epfl.ch/summer-research
Deadline for application: March 1st, 2008
