"I consider the fortunes of our republic as depending, in an eminent degree, on the extinguishment of the public debt..."
~ President Thomas Jefferson to his Secretary of the Treasury,
Albert Gallatin (October 11, 1809)
Albert Gallatin (October 11, 1809)
Swiss and US experts will discuss deficit policy in the two countries including Switzerland's experience with a rule-based budget policy and how this might apply to the American fiscal environment. Swiss budget policy is based on a constitutional provision called the "Debt Brake." This strictly links total expenditure with expected revenue and leads to both a sustainable fiscal policy and balanced budgets.
Speakers and panelists:
Dr. Fritz Zurbrugg, Director-General of the Federal Administration of Finance
Prof. Laurence J. Kotlikoff, Professor of Economics, Boston University
| Moderator: Prof. Gilbert E. Metcalf, Professor of Economics, Tufts University Discussion followed by a Swiss-style buffet-reception. This event is part of an ongoing series of CH-US dialogues on Public Finance and the “Gallatin250 Roundtables” throughout the U.S.
