Boston based Friends of Switzerland (FOSI) will be holding its 45th annual Stratton Dinner on May 20, at the Harvard Club of Boston. This gathering will feature the awarding of this year's prize to Josef H. von Rickenbach, Chairman, CEO, and Founder of PAREXEL, a leading global biopharmaceutical services provider with headquarters in New England. The dinner and awards ceremonies will be preceded by a chamber concert organized by long time FOSI member and noted musician and professor Roman Totenberg.
The Julius Adams Stratton Prize and Fellowship
The Julius Adams Stratton Prize has been awarded since 1966, with the initial honor going to Julius Adams Stratton, then President of M.I.T., for "his exemplary and lasting definition of humanistic conduct in the perplexing world of science." Since then, the prize has been presented to such preeminent individuals as composer Randall Thompson, economist John Kenneth Balbraith, scientist and artist Freddy Homburger, Ambassadors Faith Whittlesey and Alfred Defago, medical device industry leader and philanthropist Hansjörg Wyss, and many more who have contributed to Swiss-American cultural relations.
Each year's prize winner is invited to nominate a candidate who will receive a Stratton Fellowship. These grants, underwritten by FOSI, contribute to the educational and cross-cultural endeavors of young Swiss or Americans...students, political scientists, writers, researchers, musicians, and others.
The Friends of Switzerland
FOSI, as it is familiarly known, fosters friendship, interest, and understanding between the people of the United States and Switzerland. Members include Americans who formerly studied, lived, or traveled in Switzerland, Swiss nationals living in the U.S., and people who are otherwise interested in Switzerland's unique multicultural democracy, it's arts, culture, or business, and its magnificent geography. FOSI hosts a monthly 'Stamtisch' luncheon, each highlighting an interesting topic and speaker. You can find additional information on FOSI and its activities at the web site: www.friendsofswitzerland.org
