Basel and Massachusetts have a lot in common. Both are among the leading economic regions in their country; they are home to many successful high-tech companies, especially in the field of Life Sciences, and to many distinguished research and educational institutions. Since 2002, Basel and Massachusetts have been cultivating a mutually beneficial partnership. The synergies resulting from these similarities are put to good use and continually expanded – thanks to an innovative partnership model. Over the decade, both partners have realized numerous exchange programs and cooperative projects in the fields of economics, education, science, and innovation. The activities comprise high-school exchanges as well as co-operation and the exchange of knowledge in specialist fields of Life Sciences.
On October 9th 2015 Charlie Baker, Governor of Massachusetts, and Executive Councillor Baschi Dürr of the Canton of Basel-Stadt will sign the renewal of the official partnership between the two sister states. In a proclamation the two administrative bodies have defined their joint areas of collaboration and have mutually renewed their long-lasting friendship.
February 2013: A Basel delegation, led by University Rector Prof. Antonio Loprieno, Executive Councillor Dr. Eva Herzog and Basel-Area manager Iris Welten visited the Massaschusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
April 2015: Students from the Reading and Natick high schools in the Boston area were welcomed in the Grand Council Hall of the Basel Town Hall by Eva Herzog, Vice-President of the Government of Basel-Stadt.
